The AI boom has turned data centers into an infrastructure story as much as a technology story. The center of gravity has shifted from simply adding more servers to solving how to power and cool increasingly dense racks. Traditional air-cooling systems are no longer enough for the newest workloads.
That is why liquid cooling is moving from niche to mainstream. Direct-to-chip systems, immersion cooling, and other advanced thermal designs are becoming more common as operators look for ways to handle heat more efficiently.
At the same time, operators are rethinking where they place new facilities. Access to electricity, not just fiber, has become the critical factor. Many companies are exploring behind-the-meter power arrangements, battery storage, renewable integration, and other strategies to reduce dependence on an already strained grid.
The industry is also changing how it measures efficiency. Traditional metrics are being supplemented by newer ways of tracking how much compute is produced for each watt consumed. In 2026, the race is not only to build bigger models, but to run them sustainably.
